Tzu Chi's "Blue Sky, White Clouds" Uniform
Tzu Chi Volunteers are respectfully known as “Ci Cheng (慈诚)” (Faith Corps, for male volunteers) or “Wei Yuan (委员)” (Commissioner, for female volunteers). Before certification, all volunteers undergo four stages of training, gradually deepening their understanding of Tzu Chi’s spiritual philosophy and core principles, preparing them to embrace greater responsibilities. Through diligent study, thoughtful reflection, and dedicated practice in both training sessions and real-world service, volunteers continually learn through doing and awaken through their learning.
During the initial three stages of training, volunteers wear a grey uniform. This attire symbolises the spirit of humility and the sincere desire to learn that is cherished throughout this foundational period.
After successfully completing the “Grey Uniform Volunteer,” “Trainee Volunteer”, and “Volunteer” stages, volunteers will participate in a solemn certification ceremony. Upon certification, they officially become Tzu Chi Ci Cheng or Wei Yuan and start to wear the distinctive uniform: a navy blue polo shirt with white pants
This uniform embodies the profound meaning of “Blue Sky, White Clouds.” Dharma Master Cheng Yen, the founder of Tzu Chi, lovingly encourages every certified Volunteer with a Mission to cultivate “a mind as open and vast as the blue sky, and actions as pure and selfless as white clouds.”
Certification is not the endpoint, but the true beginning of diligently living out compassion. It marks a journey from nurturing a compassionate heart to opening the gate of wisdom, a path of cultivating both blessings and wisdom for the benefit of oneself and others.
