Charity holds a significant place in Tzu Chi’s mission. Equally heartening is the serene presence of our volunteers, adorned in blue and white, as they serve communities with quiet humility, gentle care, and unwavering dedication.
Dharma Master Cheng Yen reminds us that to bring peace to the world, we must first purify our hearts. Genuine transformation begins from within. By nurturing the innate goodness in each person, we create the foundation for lasting harmony. This belief is at the heart of Tzu Chi’s humanitarian work across the globe.
In our endeavours, there is no rigid blueprint. Each act of kindness blossoms organically from a deep trust in the innate goodness that resides within humanity. In every heartfelt encounter, both the giver and the receiver are gently uplifted, discovering deeper meaning, inherent dignity, and a profound sense of interconnectedness.
The Humble Beginnings of a Cycle of Love
Tzu Chi’s journey began with a simple yet powerful act, inspired by Dharma Master Cheng Yen. She invited thirty housewives to set aside fifty cents from their daily grocery money, placing each coin into a bamboo bank with mindfulness and compassion. These small daily contributions became the foundation of Tzu Chi’s first fund to help those in need.
When one person asked, “Can I donate fifteen dollars once a month instead?”, Master Cheng Yen gently replied:
I hope for you to give a little each day. In doing so, you create thirty opportunities every month to grow a heart of compassion.
Giving with Compassion
Tzu Chi encourages those with the means to give sincerely, transforming resources into relief and planting the seeds of a continuous cycle of love.
Receiving with Gratitude, Giving in Return
Care recipients are gently encouraged to give back in their own way, cultivating dignity, purpose, and a sense of connection through small acts of kindness.
Love Passed Forward
When giving and receiving flow in harmony, compassion becomes a shared force that uplifts lives and nurtures a more caring and peaceful world.

Educate the wealthy to help the poor — guiding those with financial means to be more compassionate, and to use their strength to carry out charitable work.

Helping the poor, educating the rich — encouraging the underprivileged to bravely open their hearts, and to realize that even while receiving help, they too can contribute and help others.
Even the Smallest Act can blossom into a Cycle of Love
- Embracing "small savings, great kindness," many Tzu Chi care recipients use bamboo coin banks, cultivating gratitude and the joy of giving back.
- Care recipients are warmly invited to participate in micro-volunteering activities such as recycling, resource sorting, and street fundraising, becoming active in the cycle of love.
- In 2023, 63% of donations to Tzu Chi in Singapore were ten dollars or less, a reflection of the collective power of small but sincere giving.
- Through helping others, Tzu Chi volunteers are reminded of their own blessings and value each chance to do good for a more compassionate future.
