Tzu Chi views charity as more than just offering assistance; it is a fundamental commitment to restoring hope, promoting equitable access to essential services, and cultivating a vibrant culture of giving and genuine gratitude within the community. We warmly encourage beneficiaries to express their thankfulness through kind words, acts of service they are capable of, or even a humble contribution placed in a bamboo bank, empowering them to become participants in a continuous cycle of compassion and generosity.

Medicine

Drawing upon years of compassionate engagement in charitable work, Tzu Chi has come to a profound understanding that illness often causes families to fall into poverty, and the poor are more susceptible to serious illnesses due to a lack of affordable medical care. Here in Singapore, the rising cost of medical treatment remains a pressing concern for many, a challenge that prompts the government’s continued diligent efforts to ensure healthcare remains both affordable and accessible to all.

Guided by the unwavering principle of “Safeguarding Life and Health with Love,” our mission in Medicine extends beyond the treatment of physical ailments to encompass comprehensive emotional and psychological support, with a particular focus on serving low-income families, home-bound patients, and other vulnerable groups within our community. Mirroring our widespread charitable outreach, we operate a network of more than ten service points strategically located across the island, forming an integrated and cross-disciplinary healthcare network deeply embedded within local communities.

  • In line with our commitment to providing person-centred and accessible care within the community, we offer comprehensive outpatient services encompassing both Western medicine (internal medicine, dental, and eye care) and Traditional Chinese Medicine (internal medicine and acupuncture). Reinforcing our proactive approach to long-term well-being, we also assumed management of the Lakeside Family Medicine Clinic in 2016, with a dedicated focus on the effective management of chronic diseases.
  • Recognising the increasing need for home-based medical support within the community, Tzu Chi launched the “Home Care Services” in 2014, in collaboration with the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC), providing person-to-person healthcare for the comfort of patients and offering crucial peace of mind to their families within the familiar surroundings of their homes.
  • Addressing the shifting needs of an ageing population, Tzu Chi proactively established Seniors Engagement & Enabling Nodes (SEEN). These vital initiatives are thoughtfully designed to encourage healthy lifestyles among seniors and provide comprehensive support for ageing gracefully within their own communities.
  • Furthering our dedication to preventive health, we proudly launched our first Tzu Chi Food Farmacy in 2024. This initiative promotes the profound concept of adopting a plant-based diet heals our mind and body, and protects the earth, encouraging the embrace of plant-based diets as a cornerstone of holistic well-being and a proactive approach to disease prevention.
Ultimately, our dedicated medical teams adopt a comprehensive and holistic approach to patient care, recognising the interconnectedness of clinical well-being with social and financial circumstances, ensuring that support extends beyond medical treatment to encompass the whole person.

Education

Tzu Chi believes that the future of society lies in its people, and the flourishing of its people begins with education. Guided by the compassionate vision of Master Cheng Yen, our approach to education transcends the mere transmission of knowledge. It is a nurturing journey that builds character, fosters empathy, and prepares individuals to live with purpose and contribute selflessly to society.

Here in Singapore, Tzu Chi operates Great Love Preschools in Yishun, Toa Payoh, and Sengkang for children aged two months to six years. These centres thoughtfully integrate academic development with character education, offering enriching humanistic culture classes such as Jing Si Tea Art and Floral Arrangement to instil mindfulness, discipline, and profound respect from an early age.

To support children at various stages of development, we offer enrichment programmes such as the Parent-Child Bonding Class, which promotes shared learning and strengthens the bonds between parents and their children. The Tzu Chi Teenagers’ Class fosters self-understanding and the cultivation of positive values in youths during their formative years.

In 2019, we established the Tzu Chi Humanistic Youth Centre in Yishun as a platform for young people to engage in community service and deepen their understanding of humanistic values. Since 2005, our Continuing Education Centre has served as a beacon for lifelong learning, offering a diverse array of humanistic courses, warmly welcoming individuals of all ages to grow in wisdom and compassion.

Through a harmonious blend of classroom learning, family engagement, and community-based activities, Tzu Chi hopes to nurture generations who live with sincerity, serve with kindness, and contribute to a more caring and mindful world.

Tzu Chi views charity as more than just offering assistance; it is a fundamental commitment to restoring hope, promoting equitable access to essential services, and cultivating a vibrant culture of giving and genuine gratitude within the community. Humanistic Culture

Humanistic Culture is a core mission that reflects the aspirations of Master Cheng Yen, aiming to purify human hearts and bring infinite joy to humanity. She envisions true culture, unlike fleeting trends, as the distilled essence of life, passed down as a legacy of human character and meaningful history.

Guided by the principle of seeking the ideals of truth, beauty, and goodness, Tzu Chi’s Mission of Humanistic Culture aims to bear witness to the spirit of human goodness in both history and the unfolding of daily life.

Through various media, publications, and exhibitions, we share real-life stories of mutual support among families, perseverance through adversity, and volunteers’ heartfelt dedication to others. Rooted in our communities, these narratives offer glimpses of humanity’s purest kindness, inspiring trust and hope.

Adapting to the evolving digital age, Tzu Chi has embraced the power of multimedia storytelling. Utilising websites, social media platforms, print materials, and exhibitions, we document acts of charity and compassion, connecting those who share our values and encouraging them to translate inspiration into mindful action.

Through our Humanistic Culture mission, we hope to preserve integrity, inspire deeper moral reflection, and gently guide individuals to find beauty and joy in kindness, together, nurturing a more compassionate and harmonious society.

Tzu Chi views charity as more than just offering assistance; it is a fundamental commitment to restoring hope, promoting equitable access to essential services, and cultivating a vibrant culture of giving and genuine gratitude within the community. Environmental Protection

In response to global warming and the escalating climate crisis, Tzu Chi actively promotes Environmental Sustainability Education, diligent resource recycling, and the compassionate adoption of plant-based diets as tangible ways to reduce carbon emissions. From fostering environmental awareness to encouraging mindful daily practices, we earnestly strive to inspire a growing number of individuals to join us in reverently caring for our shared Earth.

Since 1999, Tzu Chi volunteers in Singapore have been deeply engaged in community-based recycling initiatives. Today, our commitment is visible through more than 30 dedicated Eco Points across the island. On the third Sunday of each month, we observe “Tzu Chi Environmental Sustainability Day,” where over a thousand participants gather with a shared purpose to sort and recycle materials. Volunteers also gently guide the public in cleaning and sorting recyclables beforehand, thoughtfully enhancing their potential for reuse.

Tzu Chi thoughtfully advocates for the 5R environmental principles: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, and Recycle. By cherishing the intrinsic value of natural resources and all forms of life from their very source, we promote conscious consumption and the adoption of sustainable living practices as a way of showing our respect for the planet.

Recognising the significant scientific consensus that 90% of global warming originates from human activity, Tzu Chi has launched a global campaign titled “Ethical Eating Day 111”, which calls on people to adopt a vegetarian diet as a meaningful step toward protecting the Earth, with the ultimate aspiration that each person embraces a fully vegetarian lifestyle, making compassionate, mindful choices at every meal to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable living.

For Tzu Chi, environmental protection transcends the important act of recycling. It embodies a profound way of life that seeks to coexist in harmonious balance with the Earth. We also actively cultivate partnerships with schools, corporations, NGOs, and government agencies to expand the reach and deepen the impact of our shared environmental mission.

Community Volunteerism

Volunteers are the heart of Tzu Chi’s mission, united by a shared aspiration to help others that transcends simply giving their time. Selflessly offering their service, Tzu Chi volunteers weave acts of kindness into daily life, becoming a source of warmth and strength in the communities they serve.

In 2005, Tzu Chi introduced a community volunteer system in Singapore, encouraging volunteers to engage in public service within their residential areas. Today, our volunteers are grouped into four main regions—East, South, North, and Central—each with smaller, dedicated teams. These teams lead ongoing activities like recycling and caring for the underprivileged, and collaborate with local organisations on health screenings, blood donation drives, and environmental education, inspiring more neighbours to join in acts of goodness.

Coming from all walks of life—professionals, homemakers, retirees—and regardless of age, religion, or background, Tzu Chi volunteers share a common identity as compassionate Tzu Chi volunteers when they wear the uniform.

Believing that serving others is a blessing and a journey of spiritual growth, these dedicated individuals deepen their understanding of Tzu Chi’s spirit and values through structured training and active service. Many humbly go on to become certified Faith Corps Members or Commissioners, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion in their life journey.
