Tzu Chi Food Farmacy 2025

Tzu Chi Food Farmacy

Nurturing Health and Preventing Illness Through Whole-Food Plant-Based Living

The familiar saying, “You are what you eat,” gently reminds us of the deep and lasting connection between our diet and overall well-being.

In 2021, Tzu Chi introduced the three-week Healthier Me 21-Day Challenge, a programme that provided participants with wholesome meals based on a Whole-Food Plant-Based Diet, using natural, unprocessed ingredients. By the end of 2024, 1,427 individuals had taken part, with 63% seeing improvements in their health, including reductions in the “three highs”—high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol—as well as healthier body weight, all within just 21 days.

In 2024, with the support of the Ministry of Health’s Office for Healthcare Transformation (MOHT), Tzu Chi established the Food Farmacy to further promote the healing and preventive benefits of a Whole-Food Plant-Based lifestyle. Rooted in the timeless principle that food is medicine, this initiative supports a compassionate, mindful approach to health that begins with conscious, plant-based nourishment.

What is a Whole-Food Plant-Based Diet?

A Whole-Food Plant-Based (WFPB) diet focuses on natural, minimally processed plant ingredients, prepared without added sugar, oil, or excessive salt. It is grounded in two key principles:

  1. Whole, Natural Foods
Including whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits in their most natural state, with minimal reliance on refined or processed products.
  2. 100% Plant-Based
Centred entirely on plant-based ingredients, excluding all animal-derived products such as meat, milk, eggs, and honey.

What is the Food Farmacy?

Modelled after global “Food Farmacy” initiatives and supported by MOHT and local community partners, the Tzu Chi Food Farmacy expresses the spirit of compassion through food.

The name “善食” (shàn shí) is inspired by the Chinese term for diet, 膳食. By removing the radical for “meat” (月) from the character “膳”, the remaining character, “善”, means kindness. This simple yet meaningful change reflects our belief that food should be kind—to our health, to the planet, and to all sentient life.

Eat Healthily and Keep Chronic Diseases at Bay

The National Population Health Survey 2020 revealed that more Singaporeans are being diagnosed with hypertension and hyperlipidaemia, with a slight increase in the prevalence of diabetes. These conditions—commonly known as the “three highs”—refer to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar.

Reducing the intake of oil, sugar, and salt is widely recognised as an effective way to manage and prevent these chronic conditions. In recent years, Singapore’s Health Promotion Board has launched ongoing campaigns to raise awareness of the health risks associated with excessive sugar and sodium consumption.

Despite ongoing efforts, many individuals still consume diets rich in oil, salt, and sugar, while lacking essential nutrients such as dietary fibre, calcium, and vitamin D. This imbalance highlights a growing need for practical guidance in preparing nourishing, balanced meals that are flavourful yet free from oil and sugar, and low in salt.

The Tzu Chi Food Farmacy offers a holistic response to this need, providing plant-based culinary classes, health and nutrition seminars, and personal wellness coaching. Through education, practical support, and the future distribution of whole fruits and vegetables, we empower individuals to make compassionate, informed choices for a healthier life.
